Indigenous Australian society centres around the concept of the dreaming. This term has nothing to do with a somnolent or 'dreamlike' approach to the external world or to the inner self. Instead it refers to an embracing ideology and accompanying spiritual belief about the creation of the Universe as well as a relationship of balance and harmony with all things in it. The dreaming therefore implies a Code of Conduct, a form of behaviour and a pattern of life. It implies active custodianship (of land, of sacred sites, of relationships with people), as we, as acceptance of doctrinal rules. Significantly, despite the fact that sometimes it is rendered in English as "Dreamtime", it is atemporal. It is not chronological concept (like the biblieca genesis) but a focus on and a vital connection with ancestral beings who travelled the length and breadth of the continent, forming the natural features of the landscapes and social relationships with human kind at the same time. These beings go by moving regionally specific names - the Rainbow Serpent, the Wandjins, the Lighting Brothers, and they exist today as they always have and always will.
